Artist Biography
A. J. Meadows (1843-1907) was a paint born in Stepney, east London the son of artists James Meadows, (1798-1864) and a brother to James Edwin Meadows, (1828-1888). He was taught at home by his father and probably his elder brother James and he went on to forge a successful career as a marine paint. Quite the itinerant he travelled extensively, painting harbours, rivers and coastal scenes in England, France and Holland and around the Mediterranean. Unusually for someone whose work is represented in many British museums and art galleries he appears to have exhibited very little. He is recorded as only having shown at the RBA and Arthur Tooth & Sons and at the Newlyn Art Gallery.
