A fine and delicate study of a landscape in Sussex, England, by the artist Sir Walter Thomas Monnington PPRA (1902-1976), in pen and ink with ink wash. While minimal, each line adds to the composition, and depth is produced by the skilled use of wash. Well-presented in a card mount, with inscription label to the reverse, as shown. Unsigned and inscribed. On wove.

In fine condition overall. Some small marks to the upper part of the drawing, as can be seen in the photographs provided.

Artist Biography

Sir Walter Thomas Monnington PPRA (2 October 1902 – 7 January 1976) was an English painter, notable for several large murals, his work as a war artist and for his Presidency of the Royal Academy. He grew up in Sussex, and later studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and the British School in Rome. From 1925, he lived in London and taught at both the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. Elected President of the Royal Academy in 1966, Monnington was the first abstract artist to hold the post, and is credited with restoring the fortunes of the Academy.
