Description

Arthur Kemp - Original Mid 20th Century Watercolour. Unsigned. In fine condition.

From a collection of watercolours we acquired by Arthur Charles Kemp (1906-1968). One of the paintings in the collection has a Liss Fine Art label on the reverse, which states Provenance: Jeremy Raynham-Kemp. Arthur Kemp was one of three children born to a Quaker family from near Birmingham. His father encouraged him to pursue a musical career but Kemp’s dream was to become a painter. He studied at Birmingham School of Art and qualified as an art teacher, finding a position at the Rugby College of Technology and Art (now Coventry University). Kemp made many trips to the wilds of Wales or the Cornish seacoast, with his son Jeremy, to draw and paint landscapes. He often took on sacred themes and learned to work with metal and completed church commissions for chalices and other liturgical vessels. According to his son, Kemp was also involved in the post-war reconstruction of Coventry Cathedral. MOMA Wales have a large collection of paintings by Arthur Kemp and have been responsible for a number of shows of his work.
