A finely detailed, meticulous watercolour with pen and ink details and body-colour, by the listed British artist Arthur Edward Henderson FSA FRIBA (1870-1956). Henderson has rendered this elaborate and extremely ostentatious Gothic altarpiece in a playful, illustrative manner. His own proficiency in architectural subject matter is evident, and this work displays a confident but loose style, in contrast with some of his more mathematical drawings and watercolours found in the collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
One of the last examples of an architectural style prevalent in the 15th Century, altarpieces such as this began to decline during the Renaissance. Toledo Cathedral, in Toledo, Central Spain, is considered to be the Magnum Opus of High Gothic on the Iberian Peninsula.
Well-presented in a dark gilt wooden frame, and gilt card mount, as shown. Inscribed by the artist to the lower left 'Capilla Mayor, Toledo', and signed to the lower right corner.
Signed and inscribed. On wove.In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is some light even surface discolouration. Light abrasion to the gilt mount, and very minor scuffing to the corners of the frame.

Arthur Edward Henderson FSA FRIBA (1870-1956) was an artist and architect who resided at East Grinstead, Sussex. The son of John S. Henderson, he was born in 1870 and educated at Aberdeen. He studied architecture and was awarded the Owen Jones travelling studentship in 1896, which enabled him to visit Constantinople, where he lived for some years, acquiring a close knowledge of Byzantine architecture. He was appointed architect to the British excavations of the Temple of Diana at Ephesus, and he also took part in an archaeological survey of Cyzicus.
He designed several buildings in Constantinople and also made a prolonged study of the church of St. Sophia there, of which his watercolour paintings are in the Victoria and Albert Museum. On his return to England he applied himself especially to the decoration and restoration of churches. The frescoes in Christ Church, Streatham Hill, are a good example of his work. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
