Artist Biography
Painter, printmaker and teacher, born in Liverpool. Desmet graduated from the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford in 1986, with a Master's degree in 1991. During the interim period, she gained a postgraduate diploma in printmaking at Central School of Arts & Crafts in 1988. As a teacher, Desmet has lectured at the Royal Academy Schools, Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Middlesex University and Leeds Polytechnic. As well as regularly showing with the RE, in 1991 Desmet was elected a member and exhibited with SWE, and she showed at the Printmakers' Council and at RA Summer Exhibitions. Her prizes included Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award, 1989; British School at Rome Scholarship in Printmaking, 1989-90; and artist-in-residence, Oriel 31, Newtown, 1990. During her year in the Italian capital, she developed an abiding interest in architectural subject matter which has been a constant theme in her work. Anne Desmet has undertaken commissions for the V&A, British Library, British Museum, National Gallery, Sotheby's, The Times, NHS Trust, Balliol College Oxford and Oxford University Press. She has shown in solo exhibitions at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in 1990, with Duncan Campbell Gallery in 2000 and 2002 and Royal Overseas League, 1992. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Ashmolean, Oxford in 1998. Public and private collections with holdings of her work include the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Victoria & Albert Museum, the Museum of London, British Museum, British Library, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, Manchester University, University of Wales, Aberystwyth, Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate, Bradford Art Gallery, HM The Queen and in museums around the world. She is represented by Hart Gallery, London.
