Artist Biography

Anna Sofia Palm de Rosa (1859-1924) was a Swedish artist and landscape painter. In the late 19th century, de Rosa became one of Sweden's most popular painters with her watercolours of steamers and sailing ships and scenes of Stockholm. In the 1880s, de Rosa studied under the history painter Edvard Perséus and the landscape painter Per Daniel Holm (1835–1903). In 1885, she travelled to Denmark, where she spent some time in Skagen. There, she painted a memorable picture of a game of cards in Skagen's Brøndums Hotel. At the age of 36, Anna Palm left Sweden, spending the rest of her life in the south of Italy, where she married infantry officer Alfredo de Rosa. During the First World War, Palm de Rosa painted extensively, especially in Baiae on the Gulf of Naples where she spent a year. Her work can be seen at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum and Uppsala University, as well as at museums in Norrköping and Helsinki.
