James Whaite was a painter of landscapes in oils and watercolours, born in Manchester. He was the son of Thomas Whaite, who was also an artist. Whaite exhibited widely, including at the Walker Art Gallery, the Royal Academy, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He was something of an itinerant, probably working as a journeyman artist. The Williamson Art Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum hold examples of his work.
