A very fine late 19th century landscape depicting the Kelly Glen of North Ayrshire. The artist Andrew Hislop has wonderfully captured the lush green landscape in his composition of expressive marks and fine brushwork. Known as a local beauty spot, Kelly Glen is renowned for its natural beauty and quaint cottages, Hislop has depicted the local saw mill near Wemyss Bay.
A well listed Scottish painter, Hislop is known for his vibrant landscapes of his native countryside, he studied at Edinburgh College of Art, 1908-13 and at the British School at Rome and is also known as 'A Healey Hislop'. This fine oil is well presented in a square gilt effect frame. Inscribed on the reverse with the location.

Born in 1881, Andrew Hislop was a Scottish painter and etcher who taught for many years at Edinburgh College of Art, he was married to the painter Margaret Ross Hislop. Hislop was President of the Society of Scottish Artists and showed at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and RSW on many occasions. His daughter is the artist Vivien Hislop. An example of his painting is in Glasgow Museums. At the outbreak of World War I Hislop was in Germany and was interned as an enemy alien at as a civilian in Germany in 1914, and spent the whole of the World War I in Ruhleben Civilian Internment Camp, a Prisoner of War Camp in the Spandau district of Berlin. Facilities at the camp included musical instruments, the camp had an Opera Company and a printing press and Hislop became Art Editor of the camp's magazine.
