There are several surface marks that stretch horizontally and diagonally through the composition. Pinholes are also noticeable to the corners and edges. Very minor flaking paint to the outer edges and what appears to be the remnants of a numbered ticket fixed and painted over to the lower right.

Alfred Richard Innott Barnes was a painter, born in London. He managed to successfully combine careers in art and banking. During World War I he served with the London Scottish Machine Gun Corps and in the Second with the Home Guard. He won a Scholarship to Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts and also studied under J. Harvey Bloom at Sutton Art School in Surrey. Barnes worked at the Wimbledon branch of the Westminster Bank, later becoming manager of the West Wickham branch, winning prizes at the Westminster Bank Art Club's competitions.
