Alfred John Billinghurst (1880-1963) was a British painter and draughtsman renowned for his impressionistic landscapes and depictions of everyday life along the Thames and in the English countryside. Born in Blackheath, London, he received part of his early education in Switzerland at St Dunstan’s College before returning to England to study art at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1899. He later continued his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts, where he absorbed influences from both the British Impressionist movement and French academic traditions. Settling in East Sheen, London, Billinghurst exhibited widely, including at the Royal Society of British Artists, of which he became a member in 1921, the Royal Academy of Arts, and the Paris Salon. His paintings often feature luminous landscapes, riverside scenes—particularly of the Thames—and intimate vignettes of daily life rendered with fluid brushwork and a lively palette. Critics have noted that his style echoes the work of Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, capturing atmosphere and light with finesse. During the First World War, he served in the Gloucestershire Regiment as a censor behind the front lines, an experience that may have influenced his focus on quiet, contemplative scenes rather than grand historical narratives. In 1920, Billinghurst married and continued his artistic practice from his London base. He was the brother of the suffragette Rosa May Billinghurst, and their relationship provides an intriguing counterpoint between his tranquil artistic life and her political activism. His works continue to appear in auction catalogues and private collections, valued for their charm and sensitivity. Alfred John Billinghurst passed away in 1963, leaving a legacy as a skilled interpreter of the English landscape and a notable figure in the British Impressionist tradition.
