Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Discolouration to the varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals a small area of restoration to the lower left. Warping to the board. Overall the artwork is in good condition for its age. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and indentations. Overall the frame also remains in good condition.

Artist Biography

Alexis Auguste Delahogue was born in 1867 in Soissons, in the Aisne department of France. He was a painter closely associated with the Orientalist movement, celebrated for his depictions of North African life and landscapes. A painter-traveller, Delahogue explored the Maghreb with his twin brother Eugène. The two brothers travelled together from Algiers to Constantine and on to El Kantara and Biskra, exhibiting their work jointly and holding membership in both the Société des Peintres Orientalistes and the Société des Artistes Algériens et Orientalistes. Alexis exhibited multiple times at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became an associate in 1889. Working with a post-Impressionist touch and a luminous palette, the brothers produced a varied body of work capturing urban life as well as desert landscapes and Bedouin villages. His paintings most frequently depicted camels, desert caravans, and oases, reflecting his fondness for the light and gleaming colours of the Orient. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1889 to 1912. His work spanned locations across Algeria, Tunisia, and the wider Maghreb, and his paintings continue to appear regularly at major auction houses. He died in 1953.
