The right edge of the sheet is rough torn, and there is a small hole from a drawing pin at the upper right corner.Alexander Hodgkinson ROI studied at the Royal College of Art in London and gained his diploma there. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1946-1967, and also with the London Group, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters of which society he became a full member. He is best known for his still life oil paintings but also painted portraits and some landscapes.Our collection of graphite figure studies shows the artist’s subtle understanding of human anatomy in a variety of poses. His fluid and assured modelling gives the figures a monumental, sculptural quality. His choice of workmen as subject for many of his drawings allows for a solid yet dynamic physicality, in poses such as lifting, reaching and bending. They seem to prefigure the modernity of Ferdnand Leger’s Construction worker series, as well as recalling the realism of Jean-Francois Millet’s Sower and Gleaner subjects.
