Artist Biography

Painter and illustrator, born in Castleford, Yorkshire, where like his fellow pupil Henry Moore, he attended Leeds College of Art, 1914-17, before joining the Royal Flying Corps during World War I until 1919. By 1920 he has shown his first work in public at Leeds City Art Gallery, and within three years in London at the Goupil Gallery, who were later to become his agents. He showed regularly at the West Riding Artists exhibitions and produced designs for theatres in Leeds and Castleford. During the World War II, he painted murals in army camp canteens and helped with theatrical entertainment. In 1943 he was appointed art master at Bridlington School, a post terminated by his early death. In 1986 a retrospective exhibition was held at Michael Parkin Gallery, London.
