Description

Sulis Fine Art is proud to present a very fine portrait of the famous 18th century actor David Garrick (1717-1779). He is seated in a high-back chair with grey powdered wig and fine black robes. Painted by Albert Thomas Jarvis Gilbert, this impressive posthumous study captures the actor in his later years, at the height of his popularity and notoriety.

Garrick was an English actor, playwright, theatre manager and producer who influenced nearly all aspects of theatrical practice throughout the 18th century, and was a pupil and friend of Dr Samuel Johnson. His accomplishments led Johnson to remark that "his profession made him rich and he made his profession respectable."

Handsomely presented in a swept gilt frame with ornate moulding detail. Inscribed on the reverse.

Signed. On canvas on stretchers.
