Artist Biography

Albert Lawrence Hammonds (1930-1994) was a painter who trained at Birmingham School of Art 1947-52. He also attended the Royal College of Art, London 1954-57 where his teachers included Ruskin Spear, John Minton and Carel Weight. Lawrie Hammonds as he was generally known, was for many years Head of the Art Department at Halesowen College and also taught for twenty five years at Bournville School of Art. His prolific exhibiting career included group shows at the RA, Paris Salon, Young Contemporaries, RBA Galleries, GI, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham and at the RWA. Noted for his fine depictions of steam railways, he held solo exhibitions at the RBSA Galleries, Birmingham, Newcastle upon Tyne Museum of Science and Engineering, Dudley Art Gallery, Deutsches Museum, Munich, Germany, and in Vienna. He was elected RBSA in 1962, PS 1989 and the Guild of Railway Artists in 1979. His work is represented in the collections of the Eisenbahn Museum, Vienna, National Railway Museum, York, Dudley Art Gallery and examples of his portraiture include Presidents of the Royal College of Surgeons located in Queen Elizabeth Hospital Boardroom and in the Royal College of Pathologists, London. During the 1970’s and 80’s he made regular television and radio appearances, always concerned with steam railway of which he was an acknowledged expert.
