Kinsley was a landscape artist who also painted coastal and marine scenes. He was born in Hull the son of a foreman in an ironworks and like his father, he followed him into heavy industry and is recorded in the census of 1871 as a ‘Moulder in an Iron Works’. Yet, by 1881 he is listed as a landscape artist living in Tufnall Park, London. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1896 and of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1889.
