Description

This charming etching depicts a street in Rouen, Normandy in the late 19th century. The artist depicts a mother and child leaving a half-timbered house. Another woman watches them go from under a large clock. Signed and tilted in graphite below the plate line. First slate etching. Presented in a card mount. On wove.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.

Artist Biography

Painter, copperplate etcher and printmaker born in Durham, whose speciality was topographical Gothic architecture which he achieved with some success. His first job was working in the drawing offices of Armstrong Mitchell of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He worked there for about four years but then began travelling extensively around England and the Continent. He worked for a while illustrating various papers and periodicals in the North of England. In 1909 he published a set of 12 etchings of Oxford University Colleges and followed this up in 1910 with a set of 7 etchings focusing on the Cambridge University Colleges. In 1912 he spent about half a year in Venice where he produced many drawings, including The Doge’s Palace, Piazza San Marco, The Bridge of Sighs, Ca D’Oro, Canale Albrizzi, Palazzo Dario, The Grand Canal and The Rialto Bridge.


Howarth was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1910 and held a solo exhibition two years later, at Dowdeswell and Dowdeswell. He also exhibited at Agnew's, Colnaghi's, Fine Art Society, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. The Lytham St. Annes Art Collection has examples. Howarth moved to London in 1905, then to Essex the following year, where he lived and worked until 1920. He then moved to Watford, Hertfordshire, where he remained until his death in 1936.
