An extremely fine and meticulously detailed early 19th Century watercolour, after the original by Italian Baroque painter, poet, and printmaker Salvator Rosa. The image depicts Belisarius, a military commander of the Byzantine Empire, dressed in rags and remaining armour. Watched by three Roman soldiers on the right, Belisarius leans on a ruined temple, holding out both of his hands, with his stick beside him.
Well-presented in a wide card mount and gilt wooden moulded frame, as shown.
Unsigned. On wove.The condition is good for a picture of this age, with some minor even surface discolouration. There are some thin white surface scratches to the lower right and upper left quadrant, and some light foxing to the upper areas. The frame has only minor scuffing.
