A very fine and impressive watercolour after a painting by Richard Westall RA (1765-1836) entitled 'Summer Storm: A Shepherd with his Dog and Sheep in a Stormy Landscape', currently held in the Hertford Magistrates' Court, England. The artist has produced a masterly copy of this handsome and important work by the English painter, with meticulous detail and an adept approach to shadow and light. The shepherd's dog looks to his master, echoing the shepherd's own gaze above, to the foreboding and building storm.
Handsomely presented in a washline mount inscribed 'Richard Westall R.A. c.1794, in a moulded wooden frame with gilt detail, as shown.
Unsigned and inscribed. On wove.In very good condition for a picture of this age, including some minor surface discolouration. There is a very small closed tear to the upper left corner, and the upper right edge. The frame has some minor scuffing.

Richard Westall RA (1765-1836) was an English painter and illustrator of portraits, as well as historical and literary events. Considered to be an outstanding artist of the Picturesque movement, Westall began his studies at the Royal Academy School of Arts in 1785, and was elected an Academician on 10th February 1794. He is also known for being Queen Victoria's drawing master. His works hang in the House of Lords, Sir John Soane's Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery, London. He is perhaps best known for his portraits of Lord Byron.
