An 18th century oil after Raphael. Jesus appoints Peter as the leader of His Church, entrusting him with the Keys of the Kingdom. The Raphael Cartoons are regarded as one of the great masterpieces of the Renaissance. Commissioned by Pope Leo X shortly after his election in 1513 for the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Palace, the Cartoons illustrate pivotal scenes from the lives of Saints Peter and Paul. Unsigned. The artwork has been previously restored. Inspection under UV light reveals overpainting throughout.
