Description
A guardsman in vibrant seventeenth-century costume holds a pike, with his drum and breastplate positioned behind him. The work follows the style of French painter Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891), who specialised in military subjects and painted a number of similar portraits of guardsmen. The piece is well presented in a swept gilt frame. Unsigned. On panel.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals some small areas of overpainting. Loss to the ornamentation on the upper edge of the frame.
