Description

A very fine copy of the original drawing by Boilly. This watercolour painting is on a printed lithograph base that comes from the series of grotesque characters and deranged expressions from the popular series ‘Recueil des Profiles et Grimaces’, a collection of 98 separately published original lithographs by François Séraphin Delpech of Boilly’s compositions, largely satirising various strata of French society. The watercolor on a printed base is unsigned and presented in a simple gilt frame with card mount. On wove.

Condition

In remarkable condition given its age. Very minor discolouration and very light, small amount of foxing that is almost unnoticeable. The frame has some surface scuffing.

Size

21 x 19cm (8.3" x 7.5")

Artist Biography

Louis-Léopold Boilly (5 July 1761 – 4 January 1845) was a French painter and draftsman. A gifted creator of popular portrait paintings, he also produced a vast number of genre paintings vividly documenting French middle-class social life. His life and work spanned the eras of monarchical France, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Empire, the Bourbon Restoration and the July Monarchy. His 1800 painting Un Trompe-l'œil introduced the term trompe-l'œil ("trick the eye"), applied to the technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions, though the "unnamed" technique itself had existed in Greek and Roman times.
