A striking photogravure after the fresco in the Pantheon, Paris, by the artist Jules-Eugène Lenepveu (1819–1898). The print was produced in 1893 by W W Sprague & Co, a company best known for bank note engravings. The photogravure shows four of the key panels from the original fresco, telling the story of Joan Of Arc's journey to martyrdom.
This unusual and rare print has been signed by the artist in plate and inscribed at the lower edge with the title and the publisher's details to the lower right. The print is dated at the centre top edge. The print is presented in a handsome, original, layered gilt slip with its original glazing.
On wove.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some foxing along the lower edge. There is a loss in the bottom of the far right panel and a tear to the lower right and lower left corners. There is a loss to the upper left panel, two small holes between the first and second panel and a 4cm horizontal tear at the top left of the third panel. The frame has tarnishing and surface marking across its surface. There are small losses around the outer edges. The overall appearance of the artwork is very attractive and the damage does not detract from the image itself.

Born at Angers, he studied at the école des Beaux-Arts, and later he was a pupil of François-Édouard Picot in Paris. He entered the École nationale. After winning the Prix de Rome, he went to Rome to complete his education. He became famous for his vast historical canvases, including the ceilings of the Opéra de Paris (1869–71; covered by a Marc Chagall work), and of the theatre at Angers (1871). He was director of the French Academy in Rome from 1873 to 1878. Between 1886 and 1890, he painted the fresco of the life of Joan of Arc at the Panthéon, Paris.
In 1900, two years after his death, a monument to him was put up in the courtyard of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and a pedestrianised street in Angers was later named after him.
