A guardsman in vibrant seventeenth-century costume holds a pike as he leans against a wall. The work is after a painting by French painter Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891), who specialised in military subjects and painted a number of similar portraits of guardsmen. Unsigned. On panel.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age including some discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals some small areas of overpainting. Scuffing and wear around the edges of the board.
