Horace Vernet (1789-1863) was a prominent French painter known for his dynamic historical and military scenes. Born in Paris into a family of artists, Vernet was immersed in art from a young age. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and gained early recognition for his rejection of neoclassical idealism in favour of a more realistic and dramatic style. Vernet became especially famous for his depictions of battles from the Napoleonic Wars, the French conquest of Algeria, and other contemporary military campaigns. His close ties with the French military and the royal family, particularly under King Louis-Philippe, earned him prestigious commissions, including works for the Palace of Versailles. In addition to his military subjects, Vernet travelled extensively, painting Orientalist scenes inspired by his journeys in North Africa and the Middle East. He served as the director of the French Academy in Rome from 1829 to 1835, further cementing his influence on 19th-century French art.
