A beautiful portrait painting after George Romney (1734–1802), depicting Mrs Ann Pitt in the guise of Lady Hamilton as Mirth. The composition demonstrates characteristics associated with Romney's original portrait. The soft, luminous treatment of the face, loose brushwork in the drapery, and the dramatically dark background throwing the subject into relief. Lady Emma Hamilton (1765–1815) was one of Romney's most celebrated and frequently painted muses. This later copy is well presented in a stained wooden frame. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals light retouching and restoration. There is some craquelure to the surface and light impressions in the canvas from the reverse canvas bars. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
