An interesting copy of 'The Blind Fiddler' by Sir David Wilkie RA. The original is currently held at the Tate Britain, London. The artist has faithfully and meticulously rendered the original composition, in a manner which retains the visual intrigue and characterful figures. A blind man playing the fiddle is received by a large country family, and some of their expressions are captured in the moment. The original was exhibited at the Royal Academy, to generally positive reception.
While the artist here has not included every tiny detail from Wilkie, the attempt to recreate the atmosphere and mood of the original work is both clear and successful.
Very well presented in an ornate gilt frame with name plaque.
Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and craqueleure. With some creasing to the canvas and surface dirt. Two small dents to the canvas at the left hand side. Inspection under UV light shows several small areas of restoration and overpainting.
