Description
A fine copy of an animated scene by the Dutch artist Charles Verlat (1824–1890) depicting a lumberjack protecting a woman from a bear attack. Unsigned. Believed to have previously belonged to the collection of Emil von Holstein-Rathlou, with the family name inscribed on the frame and another artist’s name misattributed verso. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Discolouration to the surface. The artwork has undergone previous restoration, including small areas of overpainting. Overall the artwork remains in very good condition for its age. Some wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and indentations.
