Description

A fine mid-19th-century genre painting depicting shell gatherers caught by an incoming tide. The mothers pray for safety whilst the children appear fearful as crashing waves advance ever closer. The work is a copy after Auguste Delacroix (1809-1868). Well presented in a swept gilt frame finished with shell and acanthus ornamentation. Signed 'F. Laurence' to the lower left and attributed to 'Delacroix'. Dated 1856. On canvas.

Condition

The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration/overpainting. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition.
