Description

A characterful genre scene after a work by the Flemish master Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638). Brouwer was an important innovator of genre painting, and frequently depicted peasants drinking, smoking, playing cards, fighting, and conversing in taverns and rural settings. Here, he depicts a man concentrating intently on lighting his pipe. The original is held in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany. Well presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On panel.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Discolouration, wear and small losses around the edges of the panel. Horizontal split to the lower section of the panel. Wear to the corners of the frame.
