Description

A charming watercolour with splashes of gouache by the artist Adolf Schill (1848-1911), portraying a lush classical garden brimming with verdant foliage and elegant stone fountains. An opulent peacock struts towards the fountains, its impressive plumage on display. The composition radiates classical sophistication and timeless refinement. Unsigned. Well presented behind glass in a gilt frame with delicate detailing. On paper.

Condition

Light discolouration to the paper, however overall the artwork is in good condition for its age. Imperfections to the glass. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and stable cracks throughout. The frame has undergone previous restoration work, including a repair to the lower left.

Artist Biography

Adolf Schill (1848-1911) was a German architect, painter, and designer known for his contributions to the decorative arts and architectural education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Stuttgart, Schill studied at the Stuttgart Polytechnic before continuing his training in Vienna and Munich, where he developed a deep appreciation for historical architecture and classical ornamentation. He later became a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he influenced a generation of artists and architects through his teaching in architectural drawing and decoration. Schill’s work reflected a synthesis of classical design principles with the evolving aesthetics of his time, emphasising craftsmanship, harmony, and historical awareness. In addition to his teaching, he contributed designs for interior decorations, stage sets, and architectural projects.
