Adam Barland - Framed Late 19th Century Oil Cattle in the Kent Countryside

Description

A fine pastoral landscape by Adam Barland (1843–1875) depicting a serene countryside scene with cattle moving through the middle ground, whilst ducks grace a shallow pond to the right. The composition employs classical techniques with warm, earthy tones and atmospheric perspective, drawing the viewer's eye centrally towards the livestock and figure, before travelling back to a wooden barn structure beyond. The painting is beautifully presented in a swept gilt frame with floral and acanthus ornamentation at the corners. Signed and dated '76 lower left. Original artist's label fixed verso. Acquired with a signed companion work (sz024). On canvas.

Condition

Fine craquelure observed in areas of the composition. Light surface discolouration throughout, including yellowing to the varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of previous restoration. The canvas has been previously relined. The frame is in very good condition. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
