Artist Biography

Aaron Abraham Shikler (1922-2015) was an American artist, best known for his official portrait of John F. Kennedy which hangs in the White House. After graduating from The High School of Music & Art, Shikler studied at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and at the Hans Hofmann School in New York. In 1943, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a cartographer. He was personally selected by Jaqueline Kennedy to paint a posthumous portrait of John F. Kennedy, which serves as his official White House portrait. The portrait stands out from portraits of other presidents as Shikler chose to depict Kennedy with his arms crossed and face downcast. "I painted him with his head bowed, not because I think of him as a martyr, but because I wanted to show him as a president who was a thinker," Shikler told The Washington Post in 1971. "A thinking president is a rare thing." Shikler also painted portraits of Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, and Hillary Clinton, as well as numerous other statesmen and celebrities. His work is held by The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Britain Museum of American Art, and the National Academy of Design, amongst others.
