Description
A fine painting in watercolour, body colour, gum arabic, and gilt paint that illustrates the narrative of St Nicholas's rescue of three young women from poverty. In one hand he holds three golden balls, symbolising the dowries which he gave to three sisters to enable them to marry. One of the three sisters kneels in an expression of gratitude to the left of the composition. A pair of cherubim support the bishop's mitre with which St Nicholas is commonly depicted in Roman Catholic iconography. There is an inscription in French to the lower edge, 'Bon St Nicolas...qui marie les filles' with a further line of indistinct inscription. Monogrammed and dated to the lower-right corner and monogrammed in graphite to the lower-left edge of the substrate. On wove.Condition
There is some slight creasing to the substrate but overall in very good condition.
