A monochrome watercolour of the Lake District, in which a cluster of houses sits at the water's edge beneath dramatic mountains. A solitary figure is out on the lake, while another sits sketching from the shore, a small touch of narrative that gives the scene its charm. The mountains dominate, rising steeply behind the houses and giving the composition much of its drama.
Worked entirely in monochrome, the artwork has the naive character of early 19th-century amateur watercolour painting, apparently completed en plein air, with all the immediacy that suggests. Unsigned. On watercolour paper.
