Description

This charming 19th-century genre scene portrays a young woman in gold silk and delicate pearls as she listens intently to an elderly fortune teller. The wise old woman leans forward to reveal the young lady’s fate as she sits relaxed with an earnest smile lighting her face. Her loyal spaniel sits patiently at the foot of her chair, subtly guiding the viewer’s gaze toward the note she holds in her hand. The composition is rendered with a skilled hand and fine attention to detail. Signed illegibly to the lower right. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Very light discolouration to the surface. Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. The artwork has been previously restored including tear repairs and small areas of overpainting. Overall the artwork is in very good condition for its age. Light wear to the frame - overall it is in fine condition.
