From brooding numbers to brooding blues, this 19th-century study of Umayyad Mosque, Damascus certainly holds history and character.
The vertical architecture and tesselating shadows lead the eye down the corridor of pillars and array of praying figures into the ominous sky. One cannot help but marvel at the precision and satisfying accuracy of the artists rendering of the natural light beaming through the intricate Mosque's interior.
A faded note attached to the rear reads:
'Entrance to the Facat (Umayyad) Mosque at Damascus. Built by the cauly(?) Crusaders & was originally a Christian church. In one part of it is an inscription in Hebrew of which the Arabs are ignorant - namely 'Thy Kingdom, and thy dominion endureth through all ages.' In the main body of the Mosque is a large tower, supposed to contain the head of John the Baptist.'
Unsigned. On Canvas on Stretcher.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and surface dirt. There are some areas of cracking on the paint surface, specifically around the bottom right quadrant as well as towards the top right.
