A fine 19th-century head study of a Newfoundland, reminiscent of British artist Edwin Landseer's style. Set against a muted background, the artist employs loose, sympathetic brushstrokes to capture the animal's soulful eyes and panting expression, rendering the dog's distinctive black, tan and white markings and characteristically shaggy coat with remarkable vitality. The work is beautifully housed in an antique gilt frame with slip, finished with scrolling acanthus, laurel and berry running patterns. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Minor surface abrasions are present. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips, scuffs, and stable cracking. Overall, the artwork is presented in good condition for its age.
