Description

A portrait of Andromache in profile, her eyes raised aloft as she sheds a single teardrop. In Greek mythology, Andromache was the wife of Hector, daughter of Eetion, and sister to Podes. The portrait likely depicts her lamentation of her husband's death. In accordance with traditional customs of mourning, Andromache responds with an immediate and impulsive outburst of grief (goos) that begins the ritual lamentation. Unsigned. Inscribed with the name of the subject to the lower-right corner. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including foxing and discolouration. There are three closed tears to the lower edge and three closed tears to the upper edge. There are extensive marks and scratches to the drawing.
