18th Century Watercolour - Portrait Of A Gentleman
Description
A very fine example of a late Georgian (1790s judging by the sitter's attire) miniature portrait. The artist has captured wonderful character in this portrait with the arched brow and very subtle sneer. The gentleman certainly holds the image of the lofty, Georgian cad well. The exact nature of the brush strokes and delicate colour palette make this portrait sing with rich depth and life.
The painting is unsigned and presented in a gilt, box frame with glazing and a verre eglomise surround.
On ivorine.Condition
The portrait is in remarkable condition for its age with only minor discolouration. The verre eglomise surround has minor losses but this does not detract from the overall presentation of the painting. The frame has some wear to the gilt across most of the left edge and general wear to the gilt that is typical for a frame of this age.
