Description

An evocative 18th-century religious oil painting rich in symbolism, portraying Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. The saint is represented through traditional iconography: a lily symbolising purity, a skull evoking mortality, a crucifix denoting his deep devotion, and angels gazing upon him, embodying his innocence and sanctity. The artist masterfully captures Gonzaga's youthful essence with delicate brushwork and meticulous attention to detail. Unsigned. Well presented in a substantial painted frame with a gilt edge. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a painting of this age including discolouration to the varnish, craquelure and abrasions throughout. There is a faint impression from the stretchers. A scratch is noted to the upper right. Inspection under UV light reveals some overpainting. The canvas has been relined. Wear to the frame including scuffs, chips and indentations.
