Description
This delightfully unusual 18th-century portrait depicts a young girl in a floral dress, accented with pink ribbons, as she playfully flies her pet maybug on a string tether. Children of the period would catch these slow-moving insects and fly them, much like a living toy. The maybug serves as a symbol of youthful amusement and the simple pleasures of childhood. Unsigned. Well presented in a simple gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Craquelure and light abrasions throughout. The artwork has undergone previous restoration, including relining, and small areas of overpainting. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age. Very light wear to the frame.
