Description
An 18th century oil on canvas depicting a typical interior tavern scene with two figures. Dressed in Dutch peasantry clothing, the figure standing drains the last of his drink from the bottle, and wears a red 'Dutch Cap', the traditional garment for men who worked in the fishing trade. The figure seated at the table can be seen smoking his pipe with a glass of red liquid placed close to him. Influences have clearly been taken from the great Dutch painters of the 16th and 17th century, renowned for their interior scenes and depictions of everyday life. On canvas laid to panel. Unsigned.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some heavy discolouration. Areas of restoration and overpainting to the left hand side background area. The canvas has been recently finished with a very shiny varnish. Where the canvas has been laid to the panel there are areas of movement and rising of the canvas.
