Roses spill from two vases in this atmospheric still life composition. In blooms of crimson, blush, ivory and gold, their petals begin to wither and fall, serving as a reminder of the transience of beauty and life, or 'memento mori', in the manner of Dutch Baroque still-life painting. The artist demonstrates fine brushwork in the rendering of the intricate forms of the flowers, and a masterful handling of light. Monogrammed and dated to the lower left. Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. One tear repair to the canvas, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Faint impressions from the stretchers. Wear to the frame, including stable cracking, scuffs, and small losses. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
