Description

A fine watercolour depicting a hunting party clearing a stone wall. The date and names of the riders and some of their horses are inscribed on the verso, they read: 'Lord Bolton (on Exhibition, grey mare), Capt. Crawford (Chantry), Capt. Inglefield R.A., Miss Yorker Lady Bolton (Chloroform), Mrs Inglefield, W. Walker (Dalesman)'. Sir Edward Augustus Inglefield was a Royal Navy officer who led one of the searches for the missing Arctic explorer John Franklin and the ships HMS Terror and HMS Erebus during the 1850s. The date of this work would place the scene during Inglefield's time at home between his second and third voyages to the Arctic. This is one of a pair of works for sale at Sulis Fine Art depicting Inglefield and his family and friends hunting. Very well presented in an oak frame with a gilt-effect inner edge. Unsigned. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some minor foxing and discolouration. There is some slight debris trapped beneath the glazing and some mild scuffs to the frame and slip. Overall in very good condition for its age.
