A remarkable mid-nineteenth-century portrait of a smartly attired young gentleman. The artist demonstrates delicate, finely detailed brushwork, particularly evident in the exquisite rendering of the embroidered details on the sitter's gold waistcoat and his jewellery. A Dutch inscription in the lower right reads "Je'oun Gemaart .853", translating to "made by Je'oun in 1853". Beautifully presented in a wooden frame with a gilt inner edge. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Overall, the condition is good for a picture of this age. Discolouration and craquelure. Faint impressions from the stretchers. Some black marks to the right-hand side. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of restoration. Light wear to the frame.
