A mystical 17th century portrait of Saint Anthony of Padua with the Infant Jesus. Within the composition Saint Anthony occupies the left of the canvas whilst the luminous Christ Child is positioned in the upper right, holding a lily branch, symbolising purity and innocence. The dark background draws your eye towards the two figures, whose warm, golden flesh tones and haloes emerge dramatically from the shadows, creating a sense of spiritual encounter. A simple ledge in the lower right anchors the composition, bearing a closed book, most likely the Bible. The upward gaze of Anthony and the outstretched hand of Christ establish a dialogue between the human and the divine, lending an intimate, devotional quality to the work. The painting is unsigned. Signs of wear consistent with age. The painting has undergone previous restoration work. The canvas has been fully relined. Inspection under UV light reveals minor areas of overpainting. Surface craquelure has been stabilised. Light abrasion/paint loss to the perimeter of the canvas. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
