Artist Biography
Yvonne Skargon (1931-2010) was a British artist, engraver, and illustrator celebrated for her delicate wood engravings and finely detailed botanical illustrations. Born in London, she studied at the Colchester School of Art and later at the Royal College of Art, where she developed a lifelong interest in natural forms and traditional printmaking techniques. Skargon became well known for her collaborations with the Folio Society and for illustrating books on nature, food, and gardening — subjects that reflected her own love of the natural world. Her works often combined precision with warmth and humour, capturing the character of plants, animals, and domestic scenes alike. In addition to her illustration work, she was a respected teacher, sharing her craft with students at the Cambridge School of Art. Skargon also wrote and illustrated several books of her own, including The Importance of Being Oscar and Lily and Hodge and Dr Johnson, which reveal her distinctive blend of wit and visual charm.
