Description

An intriguing interior etching of a potted Swiss Cheese plant, happily placed in the corner of this large conservatory, with added plate colour. The botanical print is initialled in the plate to the top left-hand corner. Signed and dated in graphite to the lower margin. Editioned 7/8. On card.

Condition

The overall condition of the print is good. However, there is some discolouration and foxing to the outer margin, and a small closed tear on the right-hand edge.

Artist Biography

Wolff Buchholz was born in Hamburg in 1935, son of the painter Ruth Maetzel and the then Hamburg attorney general Ernst Buchholz.

From 1955 to 1957 he studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg, notably with Kurt Kranz, Johannes Itten and Theo Garve.

1957 to 1958 he completed a study visit to Paris. His first etchings were done in 1957. In the sixties, he studied and worked temporarily in France and then London.

From 1964 onwards he owned a studio in Hamburg-Farmsen. Buchholz used a wide range of artistic techniques, including etching and lithography, hand drawing, egg / oil painting and acrylic painting.
