Description

This turn-of-the-century landscape by William Tatton Winter (1855-1928), depicts a shepherdess and flock passing a grove of windswept birch on a gusty day. The watercolour is signed to the lower left corner. Well presented in an ornate, gilt and swept frame with floral ornaments. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some minor discolouration to the watercolour. Some minor losses to the gilt mouldings and debris caught beneath the glazing.

Artist Biography

William Tatton Winter RBA (1855-1928) was a painter, born Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire as William Winterbottom which he later shortened to avoid confusion with another similarly named artist. He initially began work in a Manchester business, studying art in the evenings at Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. When he began painting full-time he visited Holland and Belgium and studied under Verlat at the Antwerp Academy. From 1889 exhibited at the RA, also at the Paris Salon, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Dudley Gallery Art Society, Fine Art Society, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, New Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of British Artists who elected him a member in 1896 and Walker's Gallery. In 1902 Tatton Winter was elected a member of the London Sketch Club and also showed at the Croydon Art Society and in 1924 he was one of the artists chosen to provide a miniature painting for Queen Mary's Dolls' House, now at Windsor Castle. The London Borough of Sutton contains an impressive number of paintings and drawings by William Tatton Winter and an oil painting by him is in the collection of the Mercer Art Gallery.
